Star-Studded Royal Albert Hall Event
Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday celebration is being marked by a major live event at London's Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Kirsty Young. The 90-minute programme will air on BBC One and iPlayer at 8:30pm on May 8, 2026, jointly staged and produced by BBC Studios Music Productions and Natural History Unit in partnership with The Open University.
Celebrity Guests and Performers
The event features broadcasters and colleagues including Sir Michael Palin, Steve Backshall, and Chris Packham, who will reflect on Attenborough's immense impact and lasting legacy. Musical performances include Dan Smith from Brit Award-winning Bastille performing "Pompeii" from Planet Earth III, Icelandic band Sigur Rós playing "Hoppípolla", British singer Sienna Spiro, and Paraguayan harpist Francisco Yglesias performing the traditional Pajaro Campana from Zoo Quest. The BBC Concert Orchestra will perform scores from his most unforgettable programmes.
Programme Content and Musical Elements
The BBC Concert Orchestra will perform dramatic scores associated with iconic moments from Attenborough's programmes, including the snakes and iguanas chase from Planet Earth II and the powerful wave-washing orcas sequence from Frozen Planet II. The event will also combine memorable wildlife moments from the BBC's natural history archive, creating a celebration of his most significant television achievements.
Accompanying BBC Programming
Beyond the Royal Albert Hall event, the BBC is marking Attenborough's centenary with additional programming. "Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure" will delve behind the scenes of the seminal 1979 Life on Earth series, featuring fresh interviews with Attenborough and the original production team. Additionally, Attenborough will front "Secret Garden", a new five-episode series exploring hidden worlds within Britain's gardens.
