The 12 Districts of Panem

In The Hunger Games trilogy, Panem is divided into 12 districts that serve different purposes for the central Capitol. Each district specializes in producing specific goods or services, such as coal mining, agriculture, lumber, or technology. The districts are numbered 1 through 12, and each has its own culture and economy based on its assigned industry.

District 13 and the Rebellion

Originally, Panem had 13 districts, but District 13 was supposedly destroyed 74 years before the events of the first book during a rebellion against the Capitol. The Capitol claimed to have completely eliminated District 13 as punishment. However, in the later books of the series, it is revealed that District 13 actually survived and existed underground as a hidden community planning a new rebellion.

Purpose of the Districts

The Capitol controls all 12 districts and forces them to send young people to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death. This system keeps the districts separated, poor, and under control. The districts have little communication with each other and depend on the Capitol for survival, which strengthens the Capitol's power over the population.
