Overview of Panem's Districts
Panem is a fictional nation from The Hunger Games series that is divided into 12 districts. Each district is organized to produce specific resources or goods that support the nation's economy. The districts are numbered 1 through 12 and are controlled by a central government located in the Capitol.
District Organization and Resources
Each of the 12 districts specializes in different industries. For example, District 1 produces luxury items, District 4 specializes in fishing, District 12 focuses on coal mining, and others produce goods like textiles, grain, or technology. This specialization system ensures that different regions contribute unique resources to support the entire nation.
The Hunger Games Connection
The 12 districts are central to The Hunger Games story because each district must send two young people, called tributes, to compete in the annual Hunger Games competition. This requirement is a form of control by the Capitol over the districts and serves as punishment for a historical rebellion.
Historical Context
Originally, there were 13 districts in Panem, but District 13 was supposedly destroyed during a rebellion against the Capitol. The remaining 12 districts were then kept under strict control through various means, including the mandatory participation in the Hunger Games.
