NBA Playoff Structure

The NBA playoffs feature 16 teams total, split evenly between two conferences. The top eight teams from the Eastern Conference and the top eight teams from the Western Conference advance to the playoffs based on their regular season performance. These 16 teams compete in a single-elimination tournament format where the first team to win four games in a series advances to the next round.

Playoff Rounds

The playoffs consist of four rounds. In the first round, the eight teams in each conference are paired off in matchups. The four winners from each conference advance to the Conference Semifinals. Then the Conference Finals determine the two teams that will face each other in the NBA Finals. The winner of the NBA Finals becomes the NBA champion.

Seeding and Matchups

Teams are ranked by their regular season record, with the best team in each conference receiving the number one seed. Playoff matchups are determined by seeding, with the first seed typically playing the eighth seed, the second seed playing the seventh seed, and so on. This format is designed to reward teams that performed better during the regular season.
