NBA Playoff Structure

The NBA playoffs feature 16 teams competing in a bracket-style tournament to determine the champion. The teams are split evenly between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, with 8 teams from each conference making the playoffs each year. Teams earn their playoff spot by finishing in the top 8 of their conference during the regular season.

How Teams Qualify

The eight teams in each conference that have the best records during the regular season automatically qualify for the playoffs. These teams are ranked 1 through 8 based on their win-loss records. The top seed plays the eighth seed, the second seed plays the seventh seed, and so on. This matchup system is designed to reward teams that perform well during the regular season.

Playoff Rounds and Games

The NBA playoffs consist of four rounds. In each round, teams play a best-of-7 series, meaning the first team to win 4 games advances to the next round. The First Round features all 16 teams. The Semifinals (Conference Semifinals) reduce the field to 8 teams. The Conference Finals narrow it down to 2 teams, one from each conference. Finally, the NBA Finals is a best-of-7 series between the two remaining teams to crown the champion.

Regular Season Impact

Making the playoffs is considered a significant achievement in the NBA because only teams with the best regular season records qualify. Teams compete for 82 games during the regular season to earn their playoff position. A strong regular season record also provides advantages like playing more games at home during the playoffs.
