Foundation and Steel Framework

The Sphere's construction began with a massive reinforced concrete foundation designed to support the enormous spherical structure. Engineers built a steel framework using thousands of tons of steel beams and supports arranged in a spherical pattern. This framework serves as the skeleton that holds the entire building together and supports all the weight of the exterior and interior systems.

Exterior LED Shell

The outside of the Sphere is covered with approximately 1.2 million individual LED lights called LED pucks. These lights are arranged on a flexible outer skin that completely covers the steel framework. The LED display can show images, videos, and animations across the entire exterior surface, making it one of the largest video displays in the world. Workers carefully installed each LED unit to create a seamless viewing experience from all angles.

Interior Construction

Inside the Sphere, workers constructed a venue designed to hold concerts, events, and other entertainment. The interior features advanced sound systems, projection technology, and comfortable seating or standing areas. The interior shell is separate from the exterior LED shell, creating space for mechanical systems, wiring, and climate control. This dual-shell design allows the building to maintain structural integrity while supporting heavy-duty entertainment equipment.

Technology and Systems Installation

The Sphere required installation of massive amounts of technical equipment including servers, power systems, and cooling units. Thousands of miles of fiber optic cables and electrical wiring were run throughout the structure to power the LED display and interior systems. These systems allow the Sphere to display high-resolution content and provide immersive audio and visual experiences to audiences inside and outside the building.

Construction Timeline

Groundbreaking for the Sphere took place in 2019, with construction progressing through 2020, 2021, and 2022. The project faced various challenges common to large-scale construction, including weather delays and supply chain issues. The venue officially opened to the public in September 2023 and has hosted major entertainment events since then.
