The Charges
Brady Ebert was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on attempted first-degree murder, which carries a potential life sentence. This represents an upgrade from his initial charges of attempted second-degree murder, which carries a maximum 30-year sentence. In addition to the murder charges, Ebert faces first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault.
The Alleged Incident
On March 29, 2026, Ebert allegedly drove to a home in Silver Spring, Maryland where he honked his horn and yelled obscenities. According to police, he swerved toward 79-year-old William Yates, who backed away. When Yates threw a rock at the car, Ebert backed up, accelerated sharply, and drove into the driveway, striking Yates with his vehicle. Police report Yates suffered severe trauma to his lower extremities, with injuries so severe that bone protruded from his leg.
Ebert's Defense
Ebert, 33, of Silver Spring, has proclaimed his innocence and told a district court commissioner that the incident was self-defense. He stated, "This is pure self-defense. They're the attackers." Ebert claims that surveillance video will exonerate him.
Background and Band History
Brady Ebert was a founding guitarist of Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile and played on the group's first three albums, including the critically acclaimed "Glow On" (2021). The band parted ways with Ebert in 2022 due to "a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community." Turnstile won two Grammy Awards earlier in 2026. The victim, William Yates, is the father of Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates.
Court Status
Ebert is being held in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 8, 2026 for a scheduling conference.
