How teams qualify

La Liga's top 4 finishers gain direct entry into the UEFA Champions League group stage. The team that finishes first in the standings qualifies for the group stage along with teams finishing second, third, and fourth. This qualification is automatic and does not require additional playoff matches.

Point system and standings

Teams earn 3 points for each win and 1 point for each draw. A loss earns 0 points. Over the course of a 38-match season, teams accumulate points that determine their final position. The team with the most points finishes first, and so on down the table.

Breaking ties

When two or more teams have the same number of points, the standings are determined by goal difference, which is goals scored minus goals allowed. If goal difference is still tied, the total number of goals scored is used as the next tiebreaker.

Fifth place consideration

The fifth-place finisher in La Liga can qualify for the Champions League through a different route. If certain conditions are met (such as the Copa del Rey winner also qualifying through the league), the fifth-place team may enter the Champions League qualifying rounds rather than the group stage.
