Age and Gender Requirements
Only three-year-old fillies are eligible to run in the Kentucky Oaks. Fillies are female horses, while colts and geldings (male horses) are not permitted to compete in this race. All horses must have been foaled in the same year to be considered three years old on race day.
Registration and Pedigree
Horses must be registered with The Jockey Club, which maintains official records of Thoroughbred horses in North America. The horse's pedigree and racing history are verified through these records. Only horses with proper registration documentation can be nominated for the race.
Nomination and Entry Process
Owners must nominate their horse through a formal process and pay nomination fees. Subsequently, they must pay additional entry fees to officially enter the race. These fees are established by Churchill Downs racetrack and must be paid by specified deadlines before race day.
Racing History Considerations
While there are no restrictions based on previous race results or wins, horses must be in compliance with all racing rules and regulations set by the Kentucky Racing Commission. Horses cannot have been ruled off any approved racing track or be under suspension.
Weight and Conditions
All eligible three-year-old fillies carry the same weight in the Kentucky Oaks, typically 121 pounds. This equal weight requirement ensures fair competition among all entrants regardless of their individual racing records.
