Age and Education Requirements

Players must be at least 18 years old to play professional baseball. For U.S. high school players, they must either have completed high school or be at least 21 years old to be drafted by an MLB team. International players have different pathways and can be signed at younger ages in some cases.

Draft and Signing Process

Most American and Canadian players enter MLB through the annual MLB Draft, where teams select amateur players in rounds. International players from other countries are typically signed as free agents by MLB teams. Both routes require signing a contract with an MLB organization that agrees to develop and employ you.

Minor League Development

Nearly all players must progress through a team's minor league system before reaching the major leagues. Players develop through different levels of minor league play, gaining experience and skills over several years. This development period is typically required before a player can be called up to play in MLB.

Physical and Medical Standards

Players must pass physical examinations and medical evaluations required by MLB teams. Teams assess overall health, fitness level, and any medical conditions that could affect performance. These standards ensure players can safely compete at the professional level.

No Citizenship Requirement

Major League Baseball has no citizenship requirement, meaning players from any country can play if signed by an MLB team. Many players come from Latin America, Japan, Korea, and other nations worldwide. International players must obtain proper work visas to play in the United States.
