What are the eligibility rules for the NBA Draft?

To be eligible for the NBA Draft, a player must be at least 19 years old and either be a U.S. citizen or have played college basketball. Players typically declare their eligibility by a specific deadline each year.

Age and Citizenship Requirements

College Basketball Path

Players who attend college must complete at least one season of NCAA Division I basketball. This is known as the One-and-Done rule. After one year, they can declare for the draft if they choose to leave school.

International and Professional Players

Players from outside the U.S. can enter the draft without attending college if they have professional playing experience. They must meet age requirements and declare their eligibility through the proper NBA channels.

NBA G League Option

The NBA created a developmental league pathway allowing players to skip college entirely. Players can sign with NBA G League teams and become draft eligible after one year in the league.

Declaration and Withdrawal

Players must declare their intent to be drafted by a specific deadline set by the NBA each year. After declaring, players have a limited time window to withdraw from the draft and keep their college eligibility if they choose to return to school.
