The Masters Tournament
The Masters Tournament is held every year at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It is the only major championship played at the same course every year. The tournament started in 1934 and is famous for its beautiful setting with flowering azaleas and dogwoods. The winner receives a green jacket, which is one of the most recognizable symbols in sports.
The U.S. Open
The U.S. Open is organized by the United States Golf Association and is held at different courses across the United States each year. It takes place in June and is known for being one of the most challenging tournaments because the courses are set up with very difficult conditions. The tournament has been held since 1895 and is open to both professional and amateur golfers who qualify.
The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often called the British Open, is held in the United Kingdom and is the oldest major championship, dating back to 1860. It rotates between different golf courses in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The tournament is played in July and is known for its unpredictable weather conditions and challenging links-style golf courses.
The PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America and is held at different courses across the United States. It is typically played in May and is one of the most recent majors, first held in 1916. This tournament is exclusively for professional golfers, unlike the U.S. Open which allows amateurs.
Why They Matter
Winning any of these four major championships is considered the highest honor in professional golf. Golfers are often remembered and ranked by how many majors they have won during their careers. Players who win all four majors in the same calendar year achieve what is called the Grand Slam, which has only been done once in professional golf.
