Head coaches are responsible for finding and recruiting talented players to join their team. This involves traveling to high schools, evaluating player abilities, and convincing top athletes to attend their college. Coaches also work with transfer portal players who want to switch schools. Building a strong roster through effective recruiting is critical to a program's success.
Game Planning and Coaching
Head coaches develop offensive and defensive strategies for each opponent and make key decisions during games. They design play calls, determine which players to use in specific situations, and adjust strategies based on how the game is progressing. During practices, they oversee skill development and ensure players understand their roles and responsibilities.
Assistant Coach and Staff Management
Head coaches hire and supervise assistant coaches who specialize in different positions and areas like offense, defense, and special teams. They assign coaching responsibilities, provide guidance to assistant coaches, and hold them accountable for their areas. The head coach also manages support staff including athletic trainers, strength coaches, and equipment managers.
Player Development and Welfare
Beyond football skills, head coaches are responsible for the overall development of their players, including academics, strength and conditioning, and character building. They must ensure players attend classes and maintain academic eligibility to compete. Coaches also monitor player health, work with medical staff on injuries, and create a team environment that promotes discipline and respect.
NCAA Compliance
Head coaches must ensure their program follows all NCAA rules and regulations regarding player eligibility, recruiting practices, and team operations. They work with compliance officers to maintain proper documentation and avoid violations that could result in penalties or sanctions. Understanding and enforcing these rules protects both players and the program.
