The head coach develops the overall game plan for each opponent by analyzing video, identifying weaknesses, and deciding which plays and tactics will work best. Many head coaches also call the offensive or defensive plays, though some delegate this to coordinators. The head coach manages the clock, timeouts, and challenges to referees' calls.
Team Culture and Discipline
The head coach sets the rules and standards for how players should behave on and off the field. They enforce discipline when players break rules and create a culture of hard work and accountability. Head coaches also motivate players, build team chemistry, and help create a winning environment.
Communication and Public Relations
Head coaches speak to the media before and after games, explaining their decisions and discussing the team's performance. They meet with players individually and as a team to discuss progress and expectations. Head coaches also represent the franchise in the community and build relationships with fans and sponsors.
