An NHL general manager is responsible for building and managing a professional hockey team's roster, making trades and signings, managing the team's budget, and making strategic decisions to help the team win. They oversee coaches, scout players, and handle negotiations with players and other teams.
Building the Team Roster
The general manager decides which players to sign and which to trade away. They work with scouts to evaluate talent and determine which players will help the team succeed. The GM negotiates contracts with players and decides how much money to spend on each player's salary. They also decide which young players to keep developing and which veterans to add to improve the team immediately.
Managing the Salary Cap
Every NHL team has a maximum amount of money it can spend on player salaries, called the salary cap. The general manager must keep all player salaries within this limit while still building a strong team. This requires careful planning and smart decisions about which players are worth the money spent on them. The GM must balance spending money on star players with having enough money for other positions.
Making Trades and Signings
The general manager negotiates with other teams to make trades, where players are exchanged between teams. They also sign free agents, which are players not currently under contract. The GM must decide when to trade current players for future talent and when to buy veteran players to improve chances of winning now. These decisions can make or break a team's season.
Hiring Coaches and Staff
The general manager hires the head coach and assistant coaches who will teach and manage the players during games and practices. If the coach is not doing a good job, the GM can fire them and hire someone new. The GM also hires scouts, trainers, doctors, and other support staff who help the team function properly.
Strategic Planning
The general manager creates a long-term plan for the team's success. This involves deciding whether to focus on winning right now or building for the future. The GM studies other teams, analyzes statistics, and makes predictions about which players will be valuable in the future. They must also represent the team in public and explain decisions to fans and media.
