Overall Court Dimensions

An NBA basketball court measures 94 feet in length and 50 feet in width. The court is divided into two halves by the center line, with each team defending one half. The entire playing surface is made of hardwood and is surrounded by a boundary line that players must stay within during play.

The Three-Point Line

The three-point line marks the distance from which players must shoot to earn three points instead of two. In the NBA, this line is 23 feet 9 inches away from the basket at its closest point. The line extends further away at the corners, reaching 22 feet from the basket. Any shot made from beyond this line counts as three points.

Free Throw Lane and Paint

The free throw lane, also called the paint or key, is a rectangular area directly in front of each basket. It measures 16 feet wide and extends 19 feet from the baseline. The free throw circle at the top of the lane has an 12-foot radius. Players shoot free throws from the free throw line, which is 15 feet away from the backboard.

Center Circle and Mid-Court

At the center of the court is a circle with a 12-foot diameter. The jump ball circle at the start of each game is located here. The center line divides the court into two equal halves, separating each team's offensive and defensive areas.

Basket and Backboard

Each basket consists of a 10-foot-high rim attached to a backboard. The basket is positioned 10 feet above the floor and is centered on a line 4 feet from the baseline. The backboard extends 4 feet onto the court from the baseline.
