The Pitcher and Catcher

The pitcher stands on the mound in the center of the infield and throws the baseball toward home plate. The catcher crouches behind home plate and catches the pitches thrown by the pitcher. These two positions work together as a team and are considered the battery of the defense.

The Infielders

The infield consists of four positions that defend the area around the bases. The first baseman stands near first base, the second baseman between first and second base, the shortstop between second and third base, and the third baseman near third base. Infielders are responsible for catching ground balls, throwing out runners, and covering the bases.

The Outfielders

The outfield has three positions: left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder. These players stand in the grassy area beyond the infield and try to catch fly balls and line drives hit by opposing batters. Outfielders also retrieve balls that get past the infielders and throw them back to prevent runners from advancing.

Position Numbers

In baseball statistics and scorekeeping, each position is assigned a number. The pitcher is 1, catcher is 2, first base is 3, second base is 4, third base is 5, shortstop is 6, left field is 7, center field is 8, and right field is 9. These numbers are used to record defensive plays and statistics.
