The Playing Field

The baseball field is divided into fair and foul territory. The infield forms a diamond shape with bases 90 feet apart. The outfield extends beyond the infield to the outfield wall. The pitcher's mound is located in the center of the infield, 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. The foul lines extend from home plate past first base and third base to determine if balls are fair or foul.

Batting and Base Running

A batter stands at home plate and attempts to hit a pitched ball. A pitch is called a strike if it passes through the strike zone or if the batter swings and misses. After hitting the ball, the batter must run to first base and can advance to additional bases. A runner scores when they touch all four bases in order: first, second, third, and home plate. A batter is out if three strikes are called, if they hit a fly ball caught in the air, or if they are tagged with the ball while not on a base.

Pitching Rules

The pitcher must throw the ball to the batter from the pitcher's mound. A legal pitch must be delivered with one foot in contact with the pitching rubber. The pitcher must throw strikes or face balls being called. After four balls, the batter walks to first base. Pitchers can throw different types of pitches, including fastballs, curveballs, and changeups, as long as they deliver the ball legally.

Game Structure and Scoring

A game consists of nine innings, with each team getting a turn to bat and field. During each inning, one team bats while the other team fields. An inning ends when three batters are out. A run is scored when a batter advances around all four bases and returns to home plate. The team with the most runs after nine innings wins the game. If the game is tied after nine innings, extra innings are played until one team is ahead.

Outs and Play Stoppages

There are multiple ways to record an out: three strikes, hitting a fly ball that is caught, being tagged with the ball while off base, or being thrown out at a base. Additionally, a batter is out if they hit the ball and it is bunted foul with two strikes, or if they hit an infield fly in certain situations. The umpire calls balls and strikes and makes decisions on plays. Games can be stopped due to weather, darkness, or other conditions.

Player Conduct and Violations

Players and managers must follow conduct rules and can be ejected from the game for arguing with umpires, using inappropriate language, or aggressive behavior. Violations like balks by pitchers, illegal pitches, or runners leaving bases early result in penalties. Batters cannot step outside the batter's box or use bats that do not meet league standards. All players must wear official uniforms and required safety equipment.
