Automatic Promotion to Premier League
The Championship season runs from August to May. The two teams that finish with the most points at the end of the regular season automatically earn promotion to the Premier League. These teams are crowned champions and runners-up. This automatic promotion rewards consistent performance throughout the entire 46-game season.
Playoff System for Third Promotion
Teams finishing in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th place enter the playoffs to compete for the third and final promotion spot. The 3rd place team plays the 6th place team in one semi-final, while the 4th place team plays the 5th place team in the other semi-final. These are two-leg matches played over two weeks. The two semi-final winners then meet in a single-match final at a neutral stadium to determine the third promoted team.
Automatic Relegation to League One
The three teams with the fewest points at the end of the season are automatically relegated to League One, which is the division below the Championship. These teams finish in 22nd, 23rd, and 24th place. Relegation means these teams must play in a lower league the following season.
Points System
Teams earn three points for a win and one point for a draw. A loss earns zero points. Final standings are determined by total points, with goal difference used as a tiebreaker if two teams have equal points. This system is the same across most football leagues worldwide.
Season Structure
The Championship season consists of 46 matches for each team, with teams playing every other team twice - once at home and once away. The season typically runs from August through May, with a winter break in December and January. Playoffs occur in May after the regular season ends.
