Last updated:

The IPL points table is determined by wins and losses in matches, where teams earn 2 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, and 1 point if a match is tied or has no result. Teams are ranked by total points, with ties broken by net run rate and then by head-to-head records.

Basic Scoring System

In the IPL (Indian Premier League), each team plays multiple matches during the league stage. Teams earn 2 points for each match they win and 0 points for each match they lose. If a match ends in a tie or produces no result, both teams receive 1 point each. These points accumulate throughout the season to determine overall standings.

Primary Ranking Method

Teams are ranked in the points table based on their total points earned. The team with the most points appears at the top of the table, and teams are listed in descending order by points. This is the main factor that determines which teams qualify for the playoffs.

Net Run Rate Tiebreaker

When two or more teams have the same total points, the tiebreaker is net run rate (NRR). Net run rate is calculated by dividing the total runs a team has scored by the total overs they have played, minus the total runs scored against them divided by the total overs bowled against them. The team with the higher net run rate is ranked higher.

Head-to-Head Tiebreaker

If teams remain tied after comparing points and net run rate, the head-to-head record between the specific teams involved is used. This means the results of matches played directly between those teams are examined to determine their ranking relative to each other.

Playoff Qualification

The top four teams in the final points table qualify for the IPL playoffs. The team with the most points finishes first and gets certain playoff advantages, while the team with the fourth-most points also advances. Teams ranked fifth and below are eliminated from the tournament.
