Basic Competition Format
La Liga operates as a round-robin tournament where all 20 teams play every other team twice during a single season. Each team plays 38 total matches: 19 at home and 19 away. The season runs from August through May each year. Teams are ranked by total points earned, with head-to-head records and goal difference used as tiebreakers when teams have equal points.
Point System
Teams earn 3 points for winning a match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. This system encourages teams to play to win while still rewarding teams that tie. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the La Liga championship and the title of Spanish soccer champion.
Promotion and Relegation
The bottom three teams in the final standings are relegated, meaning they drop down to the Segunda División, which is the second-level professional league in Spain. The top team from Segunda División and the winners of a playoff tournament among the next two teams move up to La Liga. This system is called promotion and relegation, and it keeps competition fair across different levels.
European Competition Qualification
The top four teams in La Liga qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is Europe's most important club soccer competition. The fifth-place team qualifies for the Europa League, a secondary European competition. These spots are valuable because they bring more matches, prize money, and international recognition to the clubs.
Player and Team Rules
La Liga has rules about squad registration, player age requirements, and foreign player limits that are set by UEFA and Spanish soccer authorities. Teams must register their players before each season and cannot make unlimited changes during the season. Each team can have a maximum squad size, and certain spots may be reserved for youth academy players to promote developing Spanish talent.
