Basic Tournament Structure
The UEFA Conference League has multiple stages including qualifying rounds, a group stage, and knockout rounds. The tournament starts in summer with qualifying matches and continues through the season, with the final played in May or June. Teams from across Europe compete based on their country's ranking in UEFA.
Group Stage Rules
In the group stage, 32 teams are divided into 8 groups with 4 teams each. Each team plays every other team in their group twice, home and away, for a total of 6 matches. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The top 2 teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage.
Tiebreaker Rules
If teams finish with equal points, the first tiebreaker is goal difference (goals scored minus goals allowed). If goal difference is also equal, the total number of goals scored is used. If still tied, head-to-head results between the teams are considered next.
Knockout Stage Rules
The knockout stage consists of Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final. In Round of 16 through Semifinals, teams play two-legged ties with one match at each team's home stadium. The team with the higher total goals across both matches advances. If aggregate goals are equal, away goals are considered, and if still tied, extra time and penalty kicks are used.
The Final Match
The Conference League Final is a single match played at a neutral stadium with no away goals rule. If the match ends in a draw, the game goes to extra time and then penalty kicks if needed to determine the winner. This is different from the two-legged ties in earlier rounds.
Team Participation Requirements
Teams qualify for the Conference League based on their performance in domestic leagues and cup competitions. Each European country is allocated a certain number of spots based on UEFA coefficients. Teams must be licensed and meet UEFA requirements to participate.
