The Record-Breaking Extension
In 2023, Anthony Davis signed a three-year, $186 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, which was the richest annual extension in NBA history according to ESPN. This was his most recent major contract agreement.
Missing the Agent's Call
When his agent called to inform him about receiving the record-breaking contract extension, Davis did not answer the phone. He later explained to Craig Melvin on the TODAY show's Glass Half Full podcast that he was in the middle of building Legos at the time. His agent expressed frustration, saying he couldn't reach Davis despite having just secured him the highest extension in NBA history.
A Serious Lego Builder
Davis revealed that building Legos is much more than a casual hobby for him. He stated that he has an entire collection of Legos and loves to build them. He previously described Legos as his peace, a place where he listens to music and drifts off. The hobby is significant enough that it caused him to miss his agent's calls not just once, but during his last two contract extensions.
Career Context
Davis, a 14-year NBA veteran, was drafted first overall in 2012 by the New Orleans Hornets after leading the University of Kentucky to the national championship in his lone college season. He has signed multiple major contracts throughout his career, including a five-year, $190 million deal with the Lakers in 2020 and a five-year, $145 million extension with the Pelicans in 2015. He currently plays for the Washington Wizards after being traded there in February 2026.
