Deleted tweets about California and Middle America
McMorrow deleted roughly 6,000 old tweets, including posts where she described herself as a California resident as late as July 2016. The deleted tweets showed she repeatedly referenced voting in California's June 2016 Democratic primary and urged voters to register. She also described herself in July 2016 as a constituent of California Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu and referenced voting in person in November 2014 in the Los Angeles area. Among other deleted posts were those lamenting ever leaving California and taking jabs at the rural Midwest. In December 2016, McMorrow wrote: 'I had a dream that the U.S. amicably broke off into The Ring (coasts + Can + Mex + parts Mich/Tex) and Middle America. Oh and The Ring nominated Obama as Prime Minister and everyone was given $1,000 and six months to pick a side.' Her campaign declined to clarify whether this post referred to a literal dream or a hypothetical situation.
Residency and voting history questions
McMorrow stated in her 2025 autobiography that she 'relocated permanently' to Michigan in 2014. However, Internet Archive records reveal deleted social media posts describing herself as a California resident through July 2016. Public records show she registered to vote in Michigan in August 2016. McMorrow's campaign spokesperson Hannah Lindow said the move from California to Michigan 'was a process' that was not complete until mid-2016, that McMorrow remained registered to vote in California during that time, and that she voted absentee in June 2016. Lindow said McMorrow considers 2014 the start of that move.
Campaign response and political evolution
McMorrow's campaign said deleting all tweets prior to 2020 is 'pretty standard for candidates.' The campaign declined to specify which positions McMorrow did and did not stand by, other than saying she stood by a comment lamenting Michigan weather. The deleted tweets reveal a range of progressive positions from 2014-2016, including contemplating a future without cars, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and comparing President Donald Trump and his supporters to Nazis. In recent years, McMorrow has adopted more moderate views and branded herself as the pragmatist in the Democratic Senate primary against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed.
Timeline of deletions
Archived snapshots from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine show McMorrow's X account contained more than 20,000 tweets in 2022. Her account now shows approximately 13,900 tweets. The deletions appear to have occurred after a 2025 New York Post story first highlighted McMorrow's disparaging remarks about Michigan and Middle America following Trump's 2016 election victory, with several posts cited in that report no longer accessible online.
Broader context in primary race
McMorrow is one of three leading Democratic candidates competing for Michigan's U.S. Senate nomination, alongside U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed. The race is among the most competitive in the country and critical for determining control of the Senate. Michigan is one of only two seats in 2026 held by Democrats in states Trump won in 2024. The August primary has become increasingly competitive, with polling showing a tight three-way race. McMorrow is not the only Democrat in the race who has deleted social media posts; Abdul El-Sayed also quietly erased thousands of old posts, including tweets championing the 'defund the police' movement.
