What Kimmel Said
On Thursday night, Jimmy Kimmel delivered a parody monologue of the White House Correspondents' Dinner on his late-night show. During the sketch, he said to Melania Trump: 'Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.' The phrase 'expectant widow' suggested she would soon become a widow. Kimmel also mocked the Trump marriage in the same monologue, at one point pretending to introduce the couple to each other by saying 'Oh, by the way, Melania, this is Donald. Donald, this is Melania.'
The Controversy and Timing
The remarks sparked significant backlash when, just two days later on Saturday, a gunman attacked the actual White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton. The shooting resulted in a Secret Service agent suffering minor injuries after the gunman charged a checkpoint. Melania and Donald Trump were both attending the dinner, marking their first time at the event since Trump's first presidential election in 2016. The proximity of Kimmel's 'widow' joke to the actual shooting incident intensified the controversy.
Melania's Response
On Monday, Melania Trump posted on X condemning Kimmel's remarks. She called him 'a coward' and described his monologue as 'hateful and violent rhetoric' that was 'intended to divide our country.' She stated that his words were 'corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America' and that his comments about her family 'isn't comedy.' She accused Disney-owned ABC of protecting Kimmel and 'running cover' for him, calling for the network to 'take a stand' and remove him from the air. 'How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?' she asked.
History of Controversy
This is not Kimmel's first incident drawing criticism for insensitive comments. In September 2025, he was taken off the air for a few days following backlash over comments he made about Charlie Kirk following Kirk's assassination. The week-long suspension prompted widespread boycotts of Disney over alleged media suppression and First Amendment violations. When Kimmel returned to air on September 23, he said 'It was never my intention to make light of a murder of a young man,' but did not formally apologize. President Trump criticized ABC's decision to reinstate Kimmel, writing on Truth Social: 'I can't believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back.'
