The Outfit

Rachel Zegler wore an Atelier Prabal Gurung gown constructed of pearl silk moire fabric. The gown featured a hand-draped laced bodice and a fitted skirt with bow detail trim. She paired the gown with a custom Jennifer Behr mask made of silk chiffon, which included dramatic tails that draped down the back of her dress.

Artistic Inspiration

The outfit was inspired by Paul Delaroche's 1833 painting 'The Execution of Lady Jane Grey,' which is currently on view at the National Gallery in London. The painting depicts Lady Jane Grey's final moments before her execution, showing her guided toward the executioner's block while her ladies-in-waiting react with horror and despair. Zegler confirmed the reference on her Instagram.

Mask Creation Process

The Jennifer Behr mask was a close collaboration between the designer and Rachel Zegler's stylist Sarah Slutsky Tooley. The mask was handcrafted and sewn at Jennifer Behr's Brooklyn atelier, with the tails specifically designed to complement the silhouette of the dress.

Event Significance

Zegler attended the Met Gala on May 4, 2026, marking her third appearance at the annual fashion event. The appearance came just days after the announcement that she would be returning to Broadway in 2027 to reprise her award-winning role as Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd's 'Evita' revival.
