The Incident

On the afternoon of May 4, 2026, a VW Taigo drove at high speed down Grimmaische Straße in Leipzig's city center, striking a crowd of pedestrians. The street leads from the central Augustusplatz into the pedestrian zone near the University of Leipzig and the Nikolaikirche. Two people were killed and at least two others sustained serious injuries. Emergency services reported approximately 20 additional affected persons, though the extent of their injuries was initially unclear.

Emergency Response

Emergency services declared a mass casualty event and mobilized approximately ten ambulances to the scene. A helicopter was also deployed. A disaster reception center was established at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, specifically designated to assist individuals without visible physical injuries who were experiencing shock or required psychological support. The Grimmaische Straße was completely sealed off by police.

Apprehension and Aftermath

The driver was quickly apprehended at the scene and posed no further threat according to police. The driver exhibited signs of psychological disturbance at the time of arrest. Leipzig's Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed two deaths and stated that no ongoing danger remained to the public. A planned GEW union demonstration near the New Town Hall was aborted due to the incident, though no demonstrators were injured.
