The 2020 Handbike Accident

On June 19, 2020, Zanardi lost control of his handbike during a stage of the Obiettivo 3 relay event and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with an oncoming truck. The crash caused extremely serious injuries including facial and cranial trauma. He was hospitalized at Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital and underwent several delicate operations before being transferred to a hospital in Padua. After further treatment in Ravenna, he returned home permanently in late September 2022.

The 2001 Racing Accident and Recovery

Nearly two decades before his death, on September 15, 2001, Zanardi lost control of his CART car at the Lausitzring in Germany due to fluids on the track. The vehicle was struck by another car, resulting in the amputation of both his legs. Despite severe blood loss and coming close to death, he survived. After six weeks in the hospital and 15 operations, Zanardi began rehabilitation and remarkably returned to racing in the World Touring Car Championship. He also designed his own prosthetics and became an accomplished hand cyclist.

Athletic Achievements and Resilience

Zanardi won two CART championships in the United States and competed briefly in Formula 1. After his 2001 accident, he reinvented himself as a hand cyclist, winning four gold medals and two silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics. He competed in the New York City Marathon and set an Ironman record. His determination and infectious spirit made him one of the most revered athletes in motorsport, praised by Pope Francis after his 2020 crash as an example of strength amid adversity.

Family Statement and Legacy

Zanardi's family announced his death on May 2, 2026, stating that he passed away peacefully on the evening of May 1, surrounded by those closest to him. The family did not provide a specific cause of death. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni praised Zanardi as a great champion and extraordinary man who turned every life challenge into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity, noting that his sporting achievements and humanity gave hope and pride to the nation.
