The TSA Confiscation

On Wednesday at JFK Terminal 1, TSA agents refused to allow Pavel Talankin to carry his Oscar onto a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt, declaring the 8.5-pound statuette posed a security risk and could be used as a weapon. This was despite Talankin having successfully flown with the Oscar multiple times on various airlines without problems. The co-director of the Academy Award-winning documentary 'Mr Nobody Against Putin' was given no option to keep the statuette in the cabin.

The Forced Shipment

When Talankin refused to place the Oscar in a hard suitcase he didn't have, Lufthansa offered him a cardboard box. Talankin videotaped airline agents bubble-wrapping the Oscar, tagging it, and preparing it for transport as checked baggage. A Lufthansa agent had previously called the TSA security checkpoint offering to personally walk Talankin to the gate and maintain possession of the statuette for the flight duration, but the TSA agent refused any compromise.

The Missing Oscar

The cardboard box containing Talankin's Oscar never made it to Frankfurt. Upon landing in Germany, Talankin discovered that Lufthansa could not locate the box despite having a ticket number for it. Robin Hessman, an executive producer on the film, confirmed that the airline reported the Oscar lost. Co-director David Borenstein noted on Instagram that he could not find a single other case of someone being forced to check an Oscar.
