How Cryptocurrency ATMs Work
When you use a crypto ATM, you first select whether you want to buy or sell cryptocurrency. For purchases, you insert cash or swipe a debit card, then scan or enter your cryptocurrency wallet address where the coins will be sent. The machine connects to a cryptocurrency exchange through the internet to check current prices and complete the transaction. Within minutes, the cryptocurrency appears in your digital wallet. For selling, you scan a QR code from your wallet, confirm the amount, and the machine dispenses cash.
Types of Cryptocurrency ATMs
There are two main types of crypto ATMs. One-way machines only buy cryptocurrency from customers (accepting cash and giving digital coins) or only sell cryptocurrency to customers (accepting digital coins and giving cash). Two-way machines do both, allowing customers to either buy or sell cryptocurrencies in a single visit. Two-way machines are less common but more convenient for users.
Security and Verification
Most cryptocurrency ATMs require identity verification for security and legal compliance. You typically need to provide a valid government ID and may need to complete additional steps like providing a phone number or email address. Some machines require fingerprint scanning. These security measures help prevent fraud and money laundering while protecting both the customer and the machine operator.
Fees and Costs
Cryptocurrency ATMs charge higher fees than online exchanges because they provide convenience and immediate access. Transaction fees typically range from 5% to 15% of the purchase amount, though some machines may charge even higher fees in certain areas. These fees cover the machine's operation, maintenance, security, and the operator's business costs. Always check the fee before completing your transaction, as different machines charge different amounts.
Risks and Considerations
Users should be aware that cryptocurrency transactions are permanent and cannot be reversed like bank transfers. If you send cryptocurrency to the wrong wallet address, it cannot be recovered. Additionally, cryptocurrency prices change constantly, so the price displayed at the ATM may differ from what you see online. Be cautious of scams and only use machines in legitimate, well-lit locations. Never share your private wallet keys or seed phrases with anyone.
