What the Hamstring Does
The hamstring muscles work together to bend your knee and pull your leg backward. They are essential for walking, running, jumping, and climbing stairs. When you kick a ball or sprint, your hamstrings are the main muscles doing the work. They also help straighten your hip when you stand up from sitting.
Where It Is Located
The hamstring is located on the back of your thigh, between your hip and your knee. It starts at the bottom of your buttocks and runs down the entire back of your leg. You can feel this muscle group by touching the back of your thigh when you bend your knee.
The Three Muscles
The hamstring is made up of three separate muscles that work as a team. The biceps femoris is on the outer back of your thigh. The semitendinosus and semimembranosus are on the inner back of your thigh. All three muscles attach at the hip and work together to move your leg.
