Basic Format

Each season of Dancing with the Stars features 12 to 16 celebrities who are new to competitive ballroom dancing. Each celebrity is paired with a professional ballroom dancer who serves as their teacher and partner. The pairs must learn and perform a different ballroom or Latin dance style each week, such as the waltz, tango, foxtrot, or cha-cha. Every week, the couples perform their choreographed routines on stage for judges and the audience.

Scoring and Judging

A panel of three to four professional dancers and choreographers judges each performance. Judges score the dancers on technique, timing, partnering, and entertainment value, typically using a scale from 1 to 10 points. The judge scores are combined and contribute to each couple's total score for the week. The couple with the lowest combined score from judges and viewer votes is eliminated at the end of each episode.

Viewer Voting

After the judges score the performances, viewers at home can vote for their favorite couples through phone lines or online voting. These viewer votes are combined with the judge scores to determine the final rankings. The couple with the lowest total score in each episode is sent home, leaving the competition with fewer couples as the season progresses.

Season Progression

The competition typically lasts about 10 to 12 weeks. Each week features new dance styles and more difficult choreography. As couples are eliminated, the remaining pairs continue competing until only two couples remain for the finale. In the finale, the last two couples perform multiple dances, and judges and viewers determine which couple wins the mirror ball trophy and the title of Dancing with the Stars champions.

Training and Rehearsals

Between performances, celebrities work with their professional partners for several hours each week to learn and perfect their dances. Professional dancers teach celebrities the basic steps, technique, and movements needed for each style. Many celebrities have no prior dance experience, so much of the focus is on building confidence and fundamental skills alongside entertainment value.
