The New Role

John Wall was hired as Howard University's president of basketball operations. Wall has already taken a hands-on approach, actively participating in team meetings, evaluating recruits and transfer targets, and shaping the program's strategic vision. His responsibilities include roster management, name, image and likeness deals, revenue sharing, agent negotiations, and player mentorship.

Wall's Path to the Position

The opportunity began on January 31, 2026, when Wall served as Howard's honorary captain for a day and expressed his desire to become a president of basketball operations at the professional level. This conversation led to the role at Howard University.

Background and Experience

Wall starred at Kentucky for one year before being drafted first overall by the Washington Wizards in 2010. He spent nine seasons with the Wizards, averaging 19.0 points and 9.2 assists while making five All-Star games. After injuries limited his production in later years, he finished his NBA career with stints in Houston, Los Angeles, and brief appearances in 2022-23. He transitioned to broadcasting as an Amazon Prime Video NBA analyst for the 2025-26 season.

Howard University Program

Wall inherits a Howard team coming off a strong 24-11 season. The Howards earned an NCAA tournament berth by winning the first four tournament game against UMBC but fell to Michigan, the eventual national champion, in the first round.
