The Basic Setup
The Hunger Games takes place in a country called Panem, which exists after a major war destroyed much of North America. Panem is divided into 12 districts controlled by a wealthy Capitol city. As punishment for a past rebellion, the government requires each district to send two young people called tributes to compete in the Hunger Games every year.
The Competition
Twenty-four teenagers, two from each district, are placed in an outdoor arena and forced to fight each other. The event is broadcast on television for the entire nation to watch. The tributes must use strategy, survival skills, and sometimes weapons to stay alive. The competition continues until only one person remains alive, and that person becomes the victor and is celebrated as a hero in their district.
The Main Character
The story follows Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the Games. Katniss is skilled at hunting and survival, but she must also navigate sponsors, media attention, and the constant danger of other competitors. Her participation in the Games becomes more significant as the story develops.
Themes and Purpose
The Hunger Games serves as a tool of control and entertainment for the Capitol. By forcing districts to send their children to fight, the government reminds people of its power and punishes them for the ancient rebellion. The story explores themes of survival, government control, inequality, and how people resist oppression.
