Current price situation
Indiana gas prices are approaching $5 per gallon at some locations. The statewide average stands at $4.42 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel as of April 30. Some area fuel stations in Mishawaka and South Bend are charging $4.99 per gallon. Indianapolis averages $4.49, while Bloomington is highest among major cities at $4.53. These represent the highest prices in four years since late July 2022.
Rapid price escalation
Gas prices have surged dramatically in under two months. On March 2, Indiana's average was just $2.80 per gallon. Prices crossed the $4 threshold on March 24. By April 30, prices had jumped to $4.42 statewide. The national average rose by $0.27 in a single week leading up to April 30.
Geographic variation
Prices vary significantly across Indiana counties. LaPorte and Warren counties have the highest averages at $4.77 per gallon. Vanderburgh County offers the cheapest fuel at $3.998 per gallon. Major cities show price ranges from $4.00 in Evansville to $4.53 in Bloomington. The price difference between highest and lowest counties exceeds 75 cents per gallon.
Diesel and crude oil impact
Diesel fuel in Indiana averages $5.50 per gallon, significantly higher than a year ago at $3.59. Brent crude oil is trading around $120 per barrel. These elevated crude prices stem from supply disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil flows. President Trump has signaled a potential Iran blockade lasting months.
Relief efforts and outlook
Governor Mike Braun implemented a temporary 30-day suspension of Indiana's gas usage tax earlier in April, but this relief expires May 8. No immediate relief is expected at the pump. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita launched IN Fuel Watch, a website tracking real-time prices across 4,600 gas stations statewide to help consumers compare costs.
