Early Years as the Washington Senators
The franchise began in 1961 as an expansion team called the Washington Senators. The team played in Washington, D.C., which was the nation's capital. The Senators struggled during their early years and never won a championship while playing in Washington. The team moved to Texas after the 1971 season.
Move to Texas and Early Decades
In 1972, the Washington Senators relocated to Arlington, Texas and became the Texas Rangers. The team played at Arlington Stadium from 1972 to 1993. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Rangers had moderate success but did not win a division title until 1996. The team made its first playoff appearance in 1996 and continued competing through the 1990s and 2000s.
Modern Era and Recent Success
The Rangers moved to a new stadium called The Ballpark in Arlington in 1994, which later became known as Globe Life Park. The team remained competitive throughout the 2000s and 2010s but did not win a World Series. In 2020, the Rangers moved to a new climate-controlled stadium called Globe Life Field. The 2023 season brought historic success when the Rangers won their first World Series championship in franchise history, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Notable Players and Achievements
Throughout their history, the Rangers have featured talented players including Nolan Ryan, who pitched for the team in the 1980s and 1990s. Other notable Rangers included Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, and Adrian Beltre. The team has won division titles multiple times and made several playoff appearances, but the 2023 World Series championship remains their greatest achievement.
