Current NBA Draft Structure
The NBA Draft consists of 2 rounds. In the first round, the 30 NBA teams select in order based on the previous season's standings, with the worst-performing team picking first. The second round follows the same order. Each team gets one pick per round, resulting in 60 total selections.
History of Draft Rounds
The NBA Draft has not always had 2 rounds. From 1985 to 1988, the draft included 10 rounds. In 1989, the NBA reduced the draft to 2 rounds, which is the format that continues today. This change was made to streamline the selection process and focus on the most promising young players.
Why Two Rounds
The 2-round format allows teams to select the most qualified college and international players while keeping the draft efficient and manageable. The first round typically features top college prospects, while the second round includes additional prospects that teams believe can contribute to their rosters.
Draft Order Determination
The draft order is determined by the previous season's standings, with the worst team picking first overall. However, teams can also trade their draft picks to other teams, which changes who makes the selection. Additionally, lottery drawings determine the top picks for teams that missed the playoffs.
