Age and High School Requirements

The NBA requires all draft-eligible players to be at least 19 years old. Additionally, players must have graduated from high school at least one year before the draft. This rule applies to all players, whether they attend college or play professionally elsewhere. For example, a student who graduates high school in June can declare for the draft the following year.

College Players and Early Entry

College players can declare for the draft after their freshman or sophomore year, as long as they meet the age requirement. Players who choose to declare early must do so by a specific deadline set by the NBA each year, usually in late April. If they withdraw their name before the deadline, they can return to college for another season.

International and Non-College Players

Players who do not attend a U.S. college must still meet the minimum age requirement of 19 years old and be one year removed from high school. International players and those who play professionally can declare for the draft if they satisfy these requirements. This allows talented young players from around the world to enter the NBA.

Why These Rules Exist

The NBA set these age and eligibility rules to ensure players are mature enough for professional basketball and have had time to develop their skills. The one-year rule prevents players from entering the draft immediately after high school, giving them time to grow physically and mentally. These requirements apply fairly to all players regardless of where they play.
