What happens at the NBA Draft

At the NBA Draft, all 30 NBA teams take turns selecting eligible players. Each team gets to pick one player per round. In the first round, teams with the worst records from the previous season generally pick first, giving struggling teams a chance to get better. Teams can also trade their draft picks to other teams if they want different players.

Who can be drafted

Most players selected come from American college basketball programs like Duke, Kentucky, and UCLA. However, international players from other countries are also eligible to be drafted. Players must declare they want to enter the draft, and college players typically enter after their junior or senior year.

The draft lottery

Before the draft takes place, there is a lottery drawing for the 14 teams that did not make the playoffs. This lottery determines which of these teams gets to pick first overall. The team with the worst record has the best odds of winning the lottery, but any of the 14 teams could potentially get the first pick.

Why the draft matters

The draft is crucial for NBA teams because it allows them to find young talent without paying huge salaries. Many future basketball stars like LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant were discovered through the draft. It gives teams the opportunity to build for the future and improve their rosters.
