What is FBS?

NCAA Division I FBS is the top tier of college football in America. Schools in this division are large universities that invest heavily in their football programs. FBS schools compete for national championships and generate significant revenue through ticket sales, television broadcasts, and sponsorships. The division includes the most talented student-athletes and the most prestigious college football programs in the country.

Conference Structure

FBS teams are organized into conferences, which are groups of schools that compete against each other regularly. Major conferences include the SEC (Southeastern Conference), Big Ten, ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), Big 12, and Pac-12. Each conference has its own rules, scheduling, and traditions. Schools in the same conference play each other multiple times per season.

Postseason Competition

The FBS season culminates in bowl games, which are special postseason matchups between top teams. The most important games are part of the College Football Playoff, where four teams compete for the national championship. Other bowl games reward good teams that did not make the playoff. These games are prestigious honors and opportunities for teams to finish their season with a victory.

Scholarship and Requirements

FBS schools offer athletic scholarships to recruit talented football players. These schools must meet strict NCAA requirements regarding facilities, coaching staff, and budget. FBS programs typically have larger rosters, more coaching staff, and better training facilities compared to lower divisions of college football.

Comparison to Other Divisions

Below FBS is NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), which features smaller schools. Division II and Division III are even lower levels of college football with different rules and funding levels. FBS is considered the most competitive and visible level of college football.
