What is the Primeira Liga?
The Primeira Liga is Portugal's highest division of professional soccer. It is the main league where the best Portuguese soccer teams compete against each other. The league is organized by the Portuguese Football Federation.
How the League Works
The 18 teams in the Primeira Liga play each other twice during the season, once at home and once away. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champion. The bottom teams are relegated to the second division.
Famous Teams
The biggest and most successful teams in the Primeira Liga include Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP. These three teams have dominated Portuguese soccer for decades and have won the majority of the league titles. Many other competitive teams also participate in the league each season.
History
The Primeira Liga was established in 1934, making it one of Europe's older professional soccer leagues. The league has grown in quality and popularity over the decades and is now considered one of the stronger soccer leagues in Europe.
