League Structure
The NWSL operates as a single-division professional league with 12 teams representing cities across the United States. Teams are grouped geographically for scheduling purposes but compete in one unified league. Each team plays 22 regular season games from spring through fall.
Regular Season
During the regular season, teams earn points for wins and draws. A win equals 3 points, a draw equals 1 point, and a loss equals 0 points. Teams are ranked by total points to determine playoff seeding and league standings. The top teams in the standings receive recognition as conference or overall leaders.
Playoff System
Six of the twelve teams qualify for the NWSL Playoffs, which uses a single-elimination format. The top seed receives a bye to the semifinals, while seeds two through six play in the quarterfinals. Winners advance through semifinals to compete in the NWSL Championship match, which determines the league champion.
Roster and Player Rules
Each team maintains a roster of professional players, including both domestic and international talent. Teams can sign players through drafts, trades, free agency, and other mechanisms. The league has salary cap rules designed to maintain competitive balance among teams while controlling costs.
Season Timing
The NWSL regular season typically runs from spring (March or April) through the fall (September or October). The playoffs and championship match occur in the fall, usually concluding by November. This schedule differs from some international women's soccer leagues and coordinates with international competition calendars.
