League Structure Overview
Professional football in Guatemala operates through a two-tier league system governed by the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala. The Liga Mayor serves as the top professional division, while the Liga Nacional de Ascenso functions as the second-tier professional league. Teams compete in a structured format to determine champions and promotion or relegation between divisions.
Liga Mayor (First Division)
The Liga Mayor is Guatemala's premier professional football competition. The league typically features 10 to 12 teams that compete throughout the year. The season is divided into two tournaments: the Apertura tournament that runs from August to December and the Clausura tournament that runs from January to May. Each tournament has a separate champion, and the top-finishing teams qualify for regional competitions like the CONCACAF Champions League.
Liga Nacional de Ascenso (Second Division)
The Liga Nacional de Ascenso serves as the professional second tier and provides a pathway for teams to reach the Liga Mayor. Teams in this division compete for promotion to the top league based on their performance. This structure allows competitive professional football at multiple levels within Guatemala's football system.
Tournament Format
Each season in the Liga Mayor consists of two separate tournaments: Apertura and Clausura. This two-tournament format is common throughout Central America and allows for multiple championship opportunities per year. Winners of each tournament receive titles and qualification spots in international competitions. The format keeps competition active and engaging throughout the entire calendar year.
Governing Authority
The Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala oversees all professional football leagues in the country. This organization establishes rules, manages scheduling, enforces regulations, and represents Guatemalan football at international levels including FIFA and CONCACAF competitions.
