What Is the Süper Lig
The Süper Lig is Turkey's professional soccer league and the highest level of soccer competition in the country. It is organized and managed by the Turkish Football Federation. The league features the best soccer teams in Turkey competing for the national championship.
League Structure and Format
The Süper Lig consists of 18 professional teams. Each season, teams play a round-robin tournament, meaning every team plays every other team twice - once at home and once away. This results in each team playing 34 matches during the regular season. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the championship.
Points and Standings
Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The standings are determined by total points accumulated throughout the season. If two or more teams finish with the same number of points, they are ranked by goal difference and goals scored.
Promotion and Relegation
The bottom three teams in the Süper Lig standings are relegated to the second division at the end of each season. To replace them, the top three teams from the second division are promoted to the Süper Lig for the next season.
Notable Teams
Some of the most famous clubs in the Süper Lig include Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş, which are known as the Big Three of Turkish soccer. These teams have won the majority of league championships and have large fan bases throughout Turkey.
Season Timing
The Süper Lig season typically runs from August to May, following the standard European soccer calendar. The league takes a winter break during the coldest months and resumes play in the spring.
