What is the Titan Submersible

The Titan is a small submarine built to carry people to very deep parts of the ocean. Unlike most submarines, it was designed to be used for tourism, allowing paying customers to visit deep-sea locations. The submersible was made mostly from carbon fiber and other materials to withstand the extreme pressure found thousands of meters below the ocean surface.

Who Designed It

OceanGate, a private company founded by Stockton Rush, designed and built the Titan submersible. Stockton Rush was the CEO and chief designer of OceanGate. The company marketed the Titan as a way for wealthy tourists and researchers to explore deep-ocean environments that very few people have ever seen.

How It Works

The Titan was powered by electric thrusters and used a special hull designed to protect passengers from water pressure at extreme depths. It had viewing ports so passengers could see the ocean and any objects around it. The submersible communicated with support ships on the surface through a tether cable.

The Titanic Expedition

OceanGate planned expeditions to explore the wreck of the RMS Titanic, which sits about 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean. These missions were marketed as unique tourism experiences, with tickets costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

2023 Incident

In June 2023, the Titan submersible imploded during a mission to the Titanic wreck, killing all five people aboard, including CEO Stockton Rush. The implosion occurred due to structural failure at extreme depths. This incident raised serious questions about the safety of the submersible and deep-sea tourism operations.
