The College Basketball Route
The most common path to the NBA is playing college basketball at universities across the United States. Players typically play for 1-4 years in college while developing their skills and getting noticed by NBA scouts. College basketball is highly competitive, and scouts evaluate players based on their performance, athleticism, and potential. Being a standout player at a major college program significantly increases a player's chances of being drafted.
The NBA Draft
The NBA Draft is held every June and is where NBA teams officially select players. The draft consists of two rounds, with 30 teams selecting players in order. Teams with worse records from the previous season get earlier picks, giving them chances to select better players. Players declare their intention to enter the draft by a set deadline, and scouts evaluate hundreds of potential players before draft day.
International Players
Players from outside the United States can also enter the NBA through the draft or as free agents. Many talented international players play in professional leagues in Europe, South America, and Asia before joining the NBA. Some international players are drafted directly from their home countries without playing college basketball. NBA teams actively scout global talent, making this a legitimate path to professional basketball.
The NBA G League
The G League is the NBA's official minor league where players develop skills before joining NBA teams. Some players bypass college and go directly to the G League through special programs. Players in the G League can be called up to NBA teams during the season or signed permanently. This path has become more popular in recent years as an alternative to college basketball.
Undrafted Free Agents
Players who are not selected in the NBA Draft can still join the NBA as undrafted free agents. Teams sign these players to contracts after the draft, often during the offseason. Many undrafted players start in the G League or on practice squads, hoping to earn roster spots. Hard work and performance can help undrafted players prove their value and stick with NBA teams.
Eligibility Requirements
Players must meet certain eligibility rules to enter the NBA. College players must be at least one year removed from high school graduation. Professional players from other countries can enter if they meet age requirements. Players declaring for the draft have deadlines to officially announce their entry and cannot change their decision after the cutoff date.
