According to Saldaña, 'Cisely, Mariel, and I were deeply moved by the story of 'Julián' and its gentle, powerful message about self-expression and acceptance.'
Story and Source Material
'Julián' is adapted from the bestselling picture book 'Julián Is a Mermaid,' which has sold widely across global markets. The story follows a seven-year-old boy who spends summer with his grandmother in Brooklyn. Influenced by her storytelling and the world around him, he begins to dream of himself as a mermaid, with the narrative moving between his everyday surroundings and a fantasy underwater world.
Production and Distribution
The film is being produced using hand-drawn animation, with production teams working across multiple countries including Ireland, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Canada. New Europe Film Sales is handling international distribution, while CAA Media Finance will oversee U.S. sales.
