The Draw and Its Challenge
Renegade, trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, drew post position No. 1 for the 152nd Kentucky Derby. The rail post is considered challenging in a large field, and Pletcher acknowledged the difficulty of the draw. Despite the unfavorable position, Renegade was set as the 4-1 morning-line favorite going into the race on May 2.
Credentials as Favorite
Renegade earned his status as morning-line favorite through a dominant 4-length victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1). Pletcher highlighted the colt's closing ability as his biggest strength, noting impressive finishing kicks in both the Arkansas Derby's final eighth and the Sam Davis Stakes' final sixteenth. The trainer emphasized that Renegade has demonstrated tactical ability to work out good trips in racing situations.
Trainer Context
Pletcher had initially pointed undefeated Ted Noffey, the 2-year-old champion male and 2025 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, as his early Kentucky Derby favorite. However, Ted Noffey was removed from training in late January due to bone bruising. Despite losing his original favorite, Pletcher managed to regroup and secure the new morning-line favorite with Renegade owned by Repole Stable and Robert and Lawana Low.
Race Preparation
As of late April, Renegade was being prepared with specific equipment adjustments. The colt was to wear three-quarter shoes on both front feet heading into the Derby. Pletcher expressed that working out a good trip would be a key concern for all contenders in the large field.
