Fabric Sourcing and Materials
Designer Emily Adams Bode Aujla worked with a vintage dealer who sourced over 100 yards of yellow fabrics from eBay in various materials. The dress incorporated tulle, taffeta, silk faille, and beadwork on lace. The color scheme featured shades of ochre, marigold, corn, and golden flax, chosen to evoke feelings of energy, sunshine, and happiness.
Design Inspiration and Structure
The gown drew inspiration from the Wiener Werkstätte, the highly influential pre-war Vienna Workshop design collective. Bode researched Viennese fashion plates and 18th-century designs, resulting in a beautiful two-tiered flounced skirt and basque-shaped corset. The silhouette featured a train attached high on the back in the manner of an 18th-century robe française, departing from SZA's previous Met Gala looks with leg-out slits.
Embellishments and Decorative Elements
The dress featured extensive embroidery with gold and silver beads and sequins. Beaded panels took the form of butterfly wings, with pendant strings of faceted crystal beads and cowrie shells adding movement. Floral appliqués were cut from remnants of saris and combined with antique rhinestones and cabochons from Europe, quartz beads from New York, and hand-painted silk wings. The train featured two wings with tassels cascading from flowers, and flowers in soft orange and pink tones were tucked into the décolletage.
