Across five episodes, Ferguson dives into core American ideals including the First Amendment and free speech boundaries, the myth and reality of individualism, patriotism alongside figures like Jason Biggs and World War II veterans, capitalism through entrepreneurship icons including Tiffany Haddish and Daymond John, and the immigrant experience of becoming American, connecting with naturalized citizens such as KT Tunstall and Salman Rushdie.
Ferguson's Perspective
Ferguson brings his distinct humor and perspective as a Scottish-born naturalized American citizen who became a U.S. citizen in 2008 after 14 years of living in the country. He guides viewers through iconic locations and unexpected corners of the nation while encountering a wide range of voices from comedians and entrepreneurs to historians and everyday Americans.
Thematic Vision
Ferguson states that one of the greatest things about being American is that what being American actually means has always been up for discussion. He describes being American as like stretchy knitwear that looks different on everybody, expressing fascination with the endless variety of American identity and how individuals interpret life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness differently.
